The Path of Meditatefulness
The Satthuvi Meditatefulness™ is a holistic practice grounded in Buddhist principles that focuses on cultivating awareness and presence in everyday life. It encourages individuals to take intentional steps and make conscious choices regarding their emotional and mental states. By integrating these practices into daily routines—such as work, sleep, walking, and stress management—practitioners can enhance their emotional balance, resilience, and overall well-being. When consistently applied, mediatefulness not only enriches various aspects of life but also guides individuals toward higher levels of consciousness and the discovery of their true life purpose.
Central to mediatefulness is the journey through the nine levels of Jhana, which represent distinct states of meditative absorption and consciousness development. Each Jhana offers unique insights, leading practitioners from joyful sensations to profound stillness and the cessation of egoic thought. This structured approach allows individuals to deepen their concentration and access intuition and wisdom, ultimately fostering a greater understanding of reality and the self. As practitioners progress through these levels, they gain valuable tools for navigating life's challenges with clarity and insight.
In professional settings, mediatefulness fosters a productive flow state characterised by heightened focus, intrinsic motivation, and clear goal-setting. By encouraging individuals to pause and thoughtfully consider their options, this practice leads to more informed and deliberate decision-making. It also helps mitigate impulsive reactions and promotes a balanced perspective, which is essential in high-pressure situations. Furthermore, mediatefulness nurtures creativity by fostering an open mindset and encouraging the exploration of new ideas, enabling innovative problem-solving and the generation of fresh concepts that can drive projects forward and inspire collaboration within teams.
Kammatthana Meditation
The Satthuvi Kammatthana Meditation™ stands as a cornerstone of the Theravada Esoteric Tradition, embodying a profound approach to personal and spiritual development. The term "Kammatthana" translates to “the place of Kamma (karma) or the place of work,” reflecting the practice's focus on intentionality and inner transformation. Meditators engage with each Cakka (chakra) individually, employing Pali mantras and refined breathing techniques to connect with Universal Energy. This process allows practitioners to gather and channel Universal Energy into the Cakkas , energising them and activating the qualities that enhance their lives. Satthuvi's teachings are rooted in the wisdom imparted by his root teacher called the Master, who dedicated two decades to solitary meditation in the serene forests of Sri Lanka, uncovering methods for harnessing Universal Energy for healing, self-empowerment, and Spiritual Awakening.
Participants in Kammatthana often report a multitude of benefits, including increased inner peace, improved concentration, and enhanced mental clarity. Emotional balance, greater resilience, and heightened compassion are common experiences, alongside improved sleep quality and sustained energy throughout the day. As practitioners delve deeper into the practice, they may find themselves liberated from negative patterns and experiencing significant improvements in physical health. Kammatthana also facilitates the development of psychic abilities and deeper meditatefulness, enabling individuals to attain higher Jhanas and moments of profound insight and awakening.
Historically, Kammatthana was a prominent meditation practice in many Theravada countries until the 19th century, when colonial influences sought to suppress it in favour of Vipassana, a practice more frequently referenced in the Pali Canon. This shift posed significant challenges to the continuity of Kammatthana, relegating it to a lesser-known aspect of Theravada Buddhism. Today, practitioners are dedicated to reviving this rich tradition, honouring its legacy while fostering personal and collective growth. The struggles faced by Kammatthana meditation practitioners, as well as the impact of colonialism on the practice, have been thoughtfully examined by Prof. Kate Crosby in her book, “Esoteric Theravada: The Story of the Forgotten Meditation Tradition of Southeast Asia.” Through this revival, we invite others to explore the transformative potential of Satthuvi Kammatthana Meditation™.
The the three fundamental works that describe Kammatthana Meditation are:
"The Path of Purification" (Visuddhimagga) by Buddhaghosa - This foundational text about Buddhist meditation techniques features Kammatthana and emphasises the importance of concentration and insight in achieving purification of the mind.
https://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nanamoli/PathofPurification2011.pdf
"Sutta Pitaka" (Discourses of the Buddha) – Pali Canon - This collection contains the direct teachings of the Buddha on Kammatthana objects and Jhana practice, including key suttas that outline mindfulness foundations.
"Vimuttimagga" (The Path of Freedom) by Upatissa - A predecessor to the Visuddhimagga, this text offers a simplified approach to the 40 Kammatthana objects, making it accessible for practitioners.
Anarammana Meditation
Satthuvi Anarammana Meditation™, which means ‘objectless meditation’, begins with the foundational practice of anapanasati, or mindfulness of breathing. Practitioners settle into a comfortable position and focus their attention on the natural rhythm of their breath, observing each inhalation and exhalation. This initial focus serves to anchor the mind, creating a sense of calm and presence. As the practitioner becomes more attuned to their breath, they gradually expand their awareness to include thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, observing them as they arise and pass away without attachment or judgement.
In this practice, the meditator learns to observe thoughts at a distance, recognising that they are transient phenomena rather than intrinsic aspects of the Self. By watching feelings and bodily sensations with equanimity, the meditator cultivates a deeper understanding of the nature of existence, recognising that they are not defined by their thoughts, bodies, or emotions. This detachment fosters a sense of inner peace and clarity, allowing the practitioner to experience a more profound connection to their True Nature.
As the meditation deepens, practitioners move into a state of nothingness or emptiness (sunyata), where the concept of objects (kasinas) - whether thoughts, feelings, or physical sensations - begins to dissolve. This space of emptiness is characterised by a profound stillness and a sense of liberation from the usual constraints of identity and perception. In this state, the meditator experiences a profound connection to the present moment, embracing the essence of existence without the limitations imposed by the self or external objects.
Nimitta Manifestation
The Satthuvi Nimitta Manifestation™ practice is rooted in the experience that the astral world serves as a realm of greater reality and potential, where thoughts and intentions can manifest more readily than in the physical realm. Practitioners enter deep meditative states, often achieving an alpha brainwave state that fosters relaxation and heightened creativity. In this altered state of consciousness achieved through trance generated with the use of a specific mantra, the mind becomes more receptive, allowing individuals to explore the astral plane and interact with energies that can assist in the manifestation process.
Once in the astral realm, practitioners focus their imagination to intentionally create and build their desired objects and experiences. This practice goes beyond mere daydreaming; it involves a deep, concentrated visualisation of the desired outcome, infused with emotion and sensory details. By vividly imagining their intentions as if they have already been realised, practitioners align with the principles of the Law of Higher Attraction, which says that “All reality is manifested from Consciousness”. The act of creation in the astral world is seen as a powerful precursor to manifestation in the material world and astral creations can be manifested in physical reality, provided that the rules of the physical reality are sustained and that the intentions are aligned with Higher Self and one’s own Life Purpose.
After the manifestation process, practitioners gradually return here and now through the right breathing, bringing with them the energy and intentions of their creations. Grounding techniques, such as mindful breathing and walking or connecting with nature, are often employed to integrate the experiences and ensure a smooth transition back to everyday life. By engaging in this practice consistently, individuals aim to reinforce their intentions and strengthen their connection to the astral realm, ultimately transforming their purposes into tangible realities in the physical world.
